Yacht Sharing Questions and Answers

How many memberships per yacht will be sold?
Only 10 memberships will be sold per yacht, each worth 28 days per year, for 3 years.

What is the sharing policy?
Each membership is broken up into four 1-week segments, starting Saturday at 5pm and ending the following Saturday at 9am. Summer sessions run from mid May to early October and winter from mid November to late March, early April the following year.

What are the minimum and maximum cruise lengths?
The minimum cruise-segment is 7 days and the maximum is 14 days consecutively.

Can I take friends along?
Yes of course you may just as if you were the sole owner of the boat. The only restriction is that they must abide by and be aware of the Rules of Conduct as you, the member, will be held responsible for their actions.

Can weeks be swapped with other members?
Once the initial allocation has been made each year, members may increase, decrease or change their time allocation. All that is asked of you is that you keep YOA advised of any changes that you have made.

Will I need training in boat operation?
No. YOA provides a Captain to drive the yacht to wherever reasonable you wish to go. All you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy yachting on crystal clear waters.

Is smoking allowed on board?
Smoking is not allowed in the cabins, saloon, galley, heads or any other enclosed areas including the bridge. Smoking is only allowed on the aft swim platform and only if it does not disturb the other guests.

Where will the yachts be located?
Ontario during the summer and Florida in the winter.

How many people can the yachts accommodate?
Surfsider I has 2.5 staterooms and can sleep 5, with room for more during the day. Surfsider II will hold 10 to 12 people for daytime cruises and 6 overnight. Surfsider III details will be posted as the launch date approaches.

How do I arrange the use of the yachts?
Members currently book through email or phone. We are working on using the internet so that you may book online using our website.

Can I sell my membership in the YOA?
Yes, any time after the second year. YOA has the Right of First Refusal and may offer the remaining year to other YOA members. If existing members are not interested, you may sell the balance to another party but they must be approved by YOA.

Why should I not buy my own boat?
Apart from the sheer amount of capital outlay, there are several reasons for not being the sole owner of such a boat. These vary from the responsibility and worry if you have not visited it recently to the actual cost of paying for the moorings, insurance and maintenance. In our experience boats like to be used – they look brighter, have less operational problems and do not deteriorate as fast if they are used and cleaned throughout the year. It is a fact that most boat owners, unless they are living abroad, use their boat only about 2-3 weeks a year. Between 15–20% of our members have in fact at some stage been boat owners themselves.
